The city of Murshidabad is located in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal state. It is situated on the banks of the holy river, Bhagirathi that is a tributary of the river Ganga. Brief History of Murshidabad

Murshidabad was the capital of Bengal, during the Mughal reign. This city was earlier known as ‘Mukhsusabad’ or ‘Makhsudabad’ – meaning ‘The Desirable City’. Murshid Quli Khan, the then Diwan of Bengal transferred the capital from Dhaka in Bangladesh, formerly called as Dacca to this city and renamed it as Murshidabad. This city later came under the rule of many eminent rulers till the year 1869 AD, when it was given the status of a separate municipality. This city has thus witnessed the rise and fall of several great dynasties and has been a witness to numerous battles including The Battle of Plassey, The Sepoy Mutiny etc. The tall forts and historic structures in this city speak volumes about its rich historic and cultural past.

Located between the co-ordinates 24° 11' North latitude and 88° 19' East longitude, the city of Murshidabad enjoys pleasant climatic conditions throughout the year. While the average temperature here is around 38o C throughout the year, during the month of January, the average temperature is around 8 o C to 12 o C. So the most appropriate time to visit this city would be during the period from October to March, when the climate is mild and soothing.
